One test decides this car

A compression test is not a formality on a RENESIS — it is the purchase decision. Everything else on an RX-8 is cheap by comparison, and a seller who will not allow one before money changes hands has told you the answer.

Before any of this: everything below involves running and driving the car, so clear the Do Not Drive check above first. If the VIN comes back with an open airbag campaign, the car should not be road-tested at all until it is repaired — arrange the free repair, then inspect it.

Rotor-face compression

Warm engine, rotary-specific tester, all six faces, normalised to 250 rpm. A conventional piston-engine compression gauge cannot read a rotary correctly. Cranking speed changes the numbers, so a weak battery reads as a dying engine — normalise, or you will walk away from a healthy car (or buy a dead one).

    The community reads 6.5–6.9 as already failing. Below that, budget for a rebuild as part of the purchase price.

Faces must also sit within 1.5 bar of each other. Even-but-low is a tired engine; uneven is a hurt one, and uneven matters more than the average.

These figures are the Mazda factory specification as quoted and normalised by the RX-8 community. We have not put a scan of the FSM page itself in front of you, so treat the attribution as second-hand even though the numbers are consistent across every owner resource we checked.

Hot restart

Drive it, shut it off, restart it immediately. A RENESIS that struggles hot is showing you its compression before the gauge does.

Ignition age

Coils and wires soften long before they fail outright, and tired ignition mimics low compression. Ask when they were last done — if the answer is vague, assume never and read the ignition costs below.

Oil consumption

These burn oil by design — the metering pump feeds it to the apex seals deliberately. An owner who says it uses none has either topped it up before you arrived or disabled the OMP, and the second is worse.

Service history over mileage

A 120k-mile car with receipts routinely outlives a 60k-mile car without them. Neglect kills RENESIS engines; miles alone do not.

The resin fuel-pump discharge pipe can crack from fuel pressure and exhaust heat.
Consequence

What fails
Certain headlamp lenses omitted a required manufacturer or importer identification marking under FMVSS No. 108.
Consequence
Mazda stated that the omission did not affect headlamp performance, and NHTSA granted Mazda's petition that the noncompliance was inconsequential to motor-vehicle safety.

Clutch-pedal bracket failures

What fails
NHTSA investigated clutch-pedal bracket failures. Mazda identified an improper body-fastener attachment sequence that could distort the bracket and lead to fatigue cracking.
Consequence
Progressive cracking can create noise and clutch disengagement difficulty and can ultimately prevent gear shifts.
Official remedy
Mazda implemented SSP82, extending clutch-pedal assembly coverage for a broader 2004–2009 population.
What you do about it
Inspect under the expired SSP82 criteria; do not treat the closed investigation as proof that an individual car is unaffected.

Every figure below was read off a vendor page or a published shop estimate. Where a job can be quoted two ways — engine only, or engine plus getting it in and out of the car — both are shown, because that distinction is the single biggest source of budget shock on this chassis.

Coils and wires are wear items here, not failures. They soften long before they die, and a tired ignition reads exactly like low compression on a cold morning — which is why the community says refresh the ignition before you panic about the engine.

Traps in the numbers

  • Cooling-fan motors are genuinely discontinued — the complete fan assembly superseded and is still stocked (~$620–$870), but you cannot buy just the motor from Mazda any more.
  • The rotors themselves were never discontinued, only superseded. Anyone quoting you "$200–$400 each" is quoting used parts: new genuine rotors are $1,100–$1,500 apiece.
  • A cheap rebuild is cheap because it reuses your rotor housings. That is a legitimate choice, not a scam — but it is a different product from a rebuild with new housings, and the price gap is about $2,100.

Things you’ll be told that aren’t true

Repeated often enough to sound like consensus. We checked, and they don’t hold up.

  • "Rotary tuition — $4k every 60–80k miles." Both halves mislead. $4k only buys the cheapest possible version of the job — your own core, resurfaced housings, about $4,200 installed — while typical all-in at a specialist runs $6,000–$8,000, as the cost table below shows. And the interval is wrong: consensus lifespan for an original engine is 80–100k miles, and a rebuild is a maintenance-dependent failure, not a scheduled service. The phrasing traces to a wheel retailer's marketing, not to owners.
  • "You must premix or you are starving the seals." Premix is a real practice and a defensible one, but it is contested rather than settled on RX8Club and r/RX8 — the car ships with an oil metering pump for this job. Track cars and OMP-delete cars are the clear-cut cases.

Where a record published no VIN range, we say so rather than implying every car is affected, and where only an index entry survives we label it. Sale prices are completed auction results, each linked to its listing. Nothing here is sourced from folklore, and where we could not verify something we left it out.
