The official record

Recalls, bulletins, investigations and programmes sourced to NHTSA, the manufacturer, or a court — sorted by what each should change about your purchase. This is a curated set, not the complete archive: NHTSA holds hundreds of manufacturer communications per model, and we kept the ones that change an inspection or a negotiation rather than the administrative paperwork. The severity calls and the “what you do about it” lines are our editorial read; the failure, consequence and remedy underneath come from the linked document. Every record here is from the USDM regulatory record — an import sold new in another market may carry campaigns that never appear in it. One caveat on the “verify by VIN” advice below: NHTSA’s lookup does not show a recall that was already repaired, and generally will not return a campaign more than 15 years old — so a clean result is not proof the older ones were ever done.

Dealbreaker (4)

Verify this is remedied before you drive it, take delivery, or hand over money.

00E069000Equipment recall1992–1995

Accessory hood-striker weld failure

What fails
Insufficient weld strength can allow the striker hook on the MazdaSpeed resinous hood to separate from its base plate.
Consequence
The hood can open while driving, obstruct forward visibility, and cause a crash.
Official remedy
Replace the hood striker with a modified striker.
What you do about it
Determine whether the accessory hood is installed and, if so, verify the modified striker before driving; confirm current parts and no-charge eligibility with Mazda.

96V149000NHTSA recall1993–1995

Brake-vacuum check-valve contamination

What fails
Oil mist from engine intake air can collect in the brake-vacuum check valve and prevent it from opening at the specified pressure.
Consequence
Reduced power-brake assist increases stopping effort and crash risk.
Official remedy
Replace two vacuum hoses, including the check valve, with modified hoses.
What you do about it
Require repair-history evidence or physical verification of the modified hoses and check valve and confirm normal brake assist; confirm current parts and no-charge eligibility with Mazda.

95V069000NHTSA recall1993–1994

Fuel-hose heat deterioration and fire risk

What fails
Residual engine heat can prematurely deteriorate fuel hoses; removing and reinstalling deteriorated hoses further increases leak risk.
Consequence
A fuel leak can cause an engine-compartment fire.
Official remedy
Install an additional electric cooling-fan control unit so the fan can run after key-off above a specified coolant temperature, and replace the fuel hoses with revised hoses.
What you do about it
Require repair-history evidence or physical verification of the fan-control and revised-hose remedy, and inspect and pressure-test the fuel system; confirm current parts and no-charge eligibility with Mazda.

94V094000NHTSA recall1993–1994

Cooling-system overpressure and engine-fire risk

What fails
The radiator-cap pressure-relief setting is too high, allowing coolant temperatures to exceed component design limits and coolant to leak or collect on top of the engine.
Consequence
Coolant leaking onto the hot exhaust manifold can cause an engine-compartment fire.
Official remedy
Inspect for coolant leakage or warning-triggering coolant loss; replace heat-damaged listed cooling components and repair affected cooling or flammable-fluid systems where indicated. Replace the radiator cap, filler cap, and filler-cap body on every recalled vehicle with redesigned parts.
What you do about it
Require Mazda repair-history evidence or physical verification of the redesigned parts and inspect for historical overheating or fire damage; confirm current parts and no-charge eligibility with Mazda.

Negotiating point (8)

Diagnose and price it before you agree a number.

09-038/24Service bulletin1993–1995

Replacement speedometer mileage documentation

What fails
A replacement speedometer starts at zero, creating a possible mismatch between vehicle mileage and displayed mileage.
Consequence
Missing documentation can obscure the car's actual mileage.
Official remedy
Record the prior mileage on Mazda's prescribed replacement label. Optional SPECMO odometer setting may leave the replacement odometer 10–31 miles above the existing mileage.
What you do about it
If the cluster was replaced, require the label and service documentation and reconcile the displayed mileage with title and repair records.

Rear stationary-gear O-ring oil leak

What fails
Engine oil may leak at the rear stationary-gear O-ring.
Official remedy
Mazda published an on-car O-ring replacement procedure; the exact procedure is not exposed in the historical NHTSA record.
What you do about it
Inspect for active leakage and obtain a rotary-specialist repair estimate if oil is present.

Worth knowing (1)

Context for the car's history rather than an action item.

PE94009NHTSA investigation1993–1994

Cooling-system leak and fire investigation

What fails
NHTSA evaluated RX-7 cooling-system leakage and associated engine-compartment fire risk.
Consequence
The investigated condition could allow leaked coolant to contact hot exhaust components.
Official remedy
The investigation led to recall 94V094000; use that campaign's remedy.
What you do about it
Use campaign 94V094000 to verify repair status.

How this was built

Official records come from NHTSA, manufacturer service documents, and court filings — each row links to the document it came from. Where a record published no VIN range, we say so rather than implying every car is affected, and where only an index entry survives we label it. Sale prices are completed auction results, each linked to its listing. Nothing here is sourced from folklore, and where we could not verify something we left it out.

Severity ratings are our editorial judgement, not statements by NHTSA or the manufacturer, and none of this is legal or safety advice. Found something wrong? Tell the mechanic — corrections are the whole point.
